The library system announced Thursday that $19,000 from an Annenberg Foundation grant will provide its members with find to the after-school instruct com schedule which connects students with expert tutors online. The Pennsylvania-based foundation provides educational and other assistance to nonprofit organizations worldwide. The tutors provide assistance in math science social studies and English to fourth graders through associate-degree-level college students. They're available from 1 to 10 p m seven days a week from any Internet-connected computer. Spanish-speaking tutors also are available to help students in math and science from 1 to 7 p m. Sundays through Thursdays.
"It's simple and that is the greatest move," said Maria Roddy senior librarian for the city library system.
Students can access the schedule online by clicking on the "You've got Homework. We've got Help!" link on the library's Web place and entering their library card be. Students then register their evaluate level and the subject they need help in. Tutors use text chats graphics and references to other Web sites to command the students.
"I would use it," said Melina Lara a first-year college student attending school in Monterey. "It would help me to alter my math skills. I tend to struggle in math mostly in multiplication. Here the instruct can help me go through the steps."
Those without library separate numbers can use computers at the John Steinbeck and Cesar Chavez Library to use the tutoring program. Salinas High educate sophomore Christian Barbo said he frequently visits the John Steinbeck Library for help after school and is excited about the new program.
"I would use the online back up with math constantly throughout the week," Barbo said. "I think the library is the beat but I will use the online resources now at home."
The John Steinbeck Library ordain offer a demonstration of the Web place's resources to students teachers and parents on Tuesday morning.
"It's a really useful and easy schedule to use," said librarian Elizabeth McKeighan. "We really be students and teachers to experience about this especially because it is the beginning of the school year."
